Most trackers want your account first, then your holdings on their servers. Folanza works without an account — fully local on your device or encrypted in your own cloud, switchable at any time.
Before Folanza
Before you see your portfolio, most trackers ask for an account first. Your holdings then sit on someone else's server, not yours — often without you consciously deciding that at sign-up. Some providers also earn money through ads or exchange referral links. And if a provider is sold or shut down, it's often no longer up to you what happens to your data.
Whichever mode you choose
Whether local mode or cloud mode — these three properties never change. They're what sets the app apart from most portfolio apps that trade "easy" for your data.
These three properties aren't a checkbox feature — they're the foundation Folanza is built on.
By default you import manually or via CSV — the app fetches price data anonymously through an edge proxy. If you want to sync with an exchange, you add a read-only API key per exchange — the app can only read, never trade or move funds (no wallet connect, no trading, no withdrawals). Default: off. If you don't want it, you never see it.
AES-256-GCM with your password, right in the browser. Even cloud backups leave your device encrypted — no one but you can get in.
The app tracks your portfolio — but never you. No Google Analytics, no Sentry, no pixel. Nobody profits from your data.

The first time you open it, you decide: local mode (everything on your device) or cloud mode — encrypted via your own Google or Microsoft account, for moving between devices. You can switch modes any time from settings.
Upload a CSV export from your exchange or enter transactions manually — optionally also automatically per exchange via a read-only key. In both modes, you alone control what the app sees.
In local mode you export manually when switching devices. In cloud mode the app handles it, encrypted via your own cloud account — you keep the key.

For Germany
The app tracks the one-year period under § 23 German Income Tax Act per FIFO lot: you know when a tax-free sale becomes possible — and at year end what you actually realised.

FIFO calculation lot by lot: every single purchase lot shows you the date its speculation period ends. No mental arithmetic on 31 December.
The app separates taxable short-term sales (< 1 year) from long-term, tax-free realisations. You see at a glance what belongs in which pot.
Pick a year and the app estimates your realised gains by FIFO, split into tax-free and taxable including the € 1,000 exemption limit, plus staking, lending and rewards income (§ 22 no. 3). Holding periods per provider, exportable as CSV and PDF — and everything is calculated locally on your device, with no upload.
The tax timing planner runs a sale through in advance: which lots FIFO would take, how much is already tax-free and which gain would stay taxable. Plus a holding-period radar with a countdown to when holdings turn tax-free — with a reminder if you want one. You decide with numbers, not by gut feeling.
Two modes
The app does both — fully local or conveniently synced via your own cloud account. You choose what fits you — switchable any time from settings.
For anyone who wants to keep full control of their data themselves. Everything stays in the browser on your device — no sign-up, no account, no cloud connection. You're in full control and handle export and device changes yourself.
Handy with multiple devices: the app syncs an encrypted backup via your own cloud account — either Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive or Dropbox. Switching devices happens automatically — nobody sees the plaintext. Only you hold the key.
Whichever mode you choose: the default is no exchange connection at all — you import transactions manually or via CSV. If you want convenience, you can optionally add a read-only API key per exchange; the app then syncs at the touch of a button. Default: off.
Nothing hidden
You always know what the app sends to the network — and what stays entirely on your device. Here's the honest split; all the details are in the expandable lists for those who are curious.
Market data only — without your personal details. Requests run through an edge proxy: providers see neither your IP, nor your holdings, nor your amounts.
Source per data type
All market requests go through an edge proxy — the provider sees the proxy's IP, not your own, and never your holdings or amounts. Only which prices are requested is forwarded — not who they belong to.
Optional and only on your click: an encrypted cloud backup in your own Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox (always just an encrypted blob) and the read-only exchange sync (Bitvavo and Kraken). With the exchange sync the request comes from the edge proxy — the exchange sees its IP address, not yours. It still learns that your account is being read, which is why the sync is off by default and never runs automatically in the background.
A second openly stated exception: if you buy the optional Pro membership, your payment and contact details are handled by the payment provider Lemon Squeezy — separately from your portfolio data, which stays local.
Third exception — the Superchart: if you switch the price chart to the Superchart, the app loads a chart window from TradingView. TradingView sees your IP address and browser data — unlike the price lookups, this does not go through the edge proxy. That is why the app asks first: nothing loads without your yes, and you can withdraw that consent at any time. TradingView never gets to see your holdings or amounts.
Everything that has to do with your wealth is computed locally by your browser. These numbers never leave your device.

Local mode is for everyone who has their own backup workflow under control and deliberately wants no cloud connection. All data stays in your browser's local storage — no sign-up, no account. Without your own backup system, cloud mode protects you better against data loss.

On your device, in the browser's local storage. If you've enabled the app lock, sensitive data is additionally encrypted with AES-256-GCM. Cloud backup is optional and always sends only the encrypted blob — no one sees the plaintext, and neither does your cloud provider.
The data is lost. There is no master key, no reset, no back door. That's the price of real encryption — and the only way to give you control. So feel free to keep multiple copies of your backup files.
Yes, completely after the first load. Live prices obviously need a connection, but all stored data, calculations, charts and features run without one.

On mobile you can optionally add the app to your home screen as a Progressive Web App (PWA) — it then behaves like a native app, including offline reading via the service worker. Crypto prices come from CoinGecko — a fixed, clearly named source. You don't need to add any API keys of your own. All requests run through an edge proxy, which shields your IP from the providers.
Your data sits on your device, not on someone else’s servers — so it stays right where it is. Local portfolio tracking keeps working even after a shutdown; only online features such as fetching current prices would fall away.
