When Folanza started, the plan was bigger: a tracker for everything. Crypto, stocks, ETFs, precious metals — your entire wealth in one place, under your control. The idea was tempting, and I believed in it for a long time.
Today Folanza is a pure crypto portfolio tracker. This step wasn't easy for me. Here's why it's the right decision:
1. The API costs were exorbitant
Reliable price data for stocks, ETFs and precious metals doesn't come for free. The providers with good coverage charge prices that are simply not sustainable for a product meant to stay fair and free of hidden costs. I would have had to pass the costs on to you or cut corners on data quality — neither was an option.
2. Multi-asset was too complex
Every asset class has its own rules: different trading hours, different metrics, different tax treatment, different data formats. Representing all of it correctly and simply at the same time would have bloated Folanza — and that's exactly what I don't want. I believe in a tool that does one thing really well, instead of many things only halfway.
3. Data quality and quantity fell short
Even when I could get the data for stocks, ETFs and precious metals, it was too patchy: missing values, inaccurate historical prices, inconsistent coverage across exchanges and countries. A portfolio tracker is only as good as its data. I didn't want to build on a shaky foundation.
Folanza does what works — and what I know my way around
With crypto, that fits: reliable data, a clear and fair foundation, and an area I've worked my way into over the years. Rather than doing many things halfway, I'd rather focus on one and do it properly. That's not a limitation — that's focus.
From here on, only crypto
Crypto-only isn't a retreat, it's a beginning. I'm now putting all my energy into a crypto portfolio tracker that's truly good: private, honest, under your control. And I'd love to have you along for the ride — tell me what you're missing, what annoys you, what you wish for. Folanza grows with its users.
Let's build the crypto tracker you really need, together.
